Sangha Spotlight — Carlos Figueroa

April 8, 2022 by MOI

How long have you been coming to MOI events?

Since July 2015

How did you get interested in meditation practice?

Life wasn’t working the way I was working it.

What does your meditation practice look like?

On some days, it looks like my mom forcing feeding me spinach. I know it’s good for me, but I don’t want it. Other days, I am planting my own garden of spinach and reaping the harvest.

Share a favorite quote, mantra, intention or saying that is currently guiding you in practice.

The obstacle in the path is the path.

What is your definition of sangha?

Nourishment. Community. Connection.

Name a book on the dharma that you consider a must read.

Reconciliation: Healing the Inner Child by TNH

What are you currently working with in your practice?

Concentration and metta.

What has mindfulness and/or mediation helped you with?

Finding peace in my everyday life. And because of that peace I am less reactive and more open to what is.

Tell us about one success story you have had on your dharma journey.

Recently on an MOI retreat, I had a big success. Typically, due to a Sunday commitment I leave retreat after breakfast. This retreat I did not have that commitment and struggled to not pull the plug early. I am happy to report I stayed until the end of the retreat and was able to reap the benefits as well as breakthrough my conditioning of leaving early to come home to the comforts of my life…my wife, my home, and my cats. Comfort vs. the discomfort that comes up on retreat and meeting that head on = success!

Tell us about one challenging story you have had on your dharma journey.

The answer above to my success story is my challenging story. They are one in the same.

Finally, what are some of your other interests outside of the dharma?

Playing drums in live concerts. Mentoring young musicians through BluesEd, a local non-profit youth development program. Riding motorcycles, especially touring across country, and exploring new places with my wife.

Thank you, Carlos!  We are so happy you are a part of MOI’s sangha!
